CH 22: So David escapes and runs and hides to a cave of Adullam. His brothers and friends soon joined him there. Slowly others joined him, men who were in debt, in trouble... There were about 400 gathered with him now, and David was their captain. A prophet he trusted of the Lord came and told David, go to the land of Judah. So David and his followers went to the forest of Hereth.
Saul learns that David is in Judah and gets very paranoid about this situation, accusing the priests at Nob of assisting David to kill him, so Saul orders all the priests of God be killed. Only Abiathar escaped; A total of 85 priests were killed that day. Abiathar goes and tells David, and David is remorse in knowing that it was his arrival in Judah that put Saul over the edge to do this horrendous act against the priests.
CH 23: David learns that the Philistines are attacking and stealing grain in Keilah so he asks the Lord if he and his 400 men should go attack the Philistines. The Lord affirms them to go and they do and win against a huge army of the Philistines. Saul finds out that David is there and pursues him but David leaves because the Lord has let him know Saul will destroy this town and those people will betray David so David ends up in Horesh with his now 600 men. Saul pursues him into the wilderness while Jonathan, Saul's son, goes to David to reaffirm his friendship with him and give him encouragement to keep the faith.
David and Saul end up on the opposite side of a mountain in the wilderness of Maon.
CH 24: Saul finds out and chooses 3,000 elite troops from Israel to search for David and his men. Now, Saul and David are so close to each other and Saul has no clue! Saul goes into a cave to urinate, when at this point, David and his men are actually in the same cave just further back where it's so dark. David's men tell David, now is your chance! Go kill Saul as this is the Lord telling you to! (vs4) But David, after just sneaking up on Saul and cutting off the corner of his robe, felt a terrible guilt, and knew, he had no right to kill the Lord's anointed one (vs 5). So David restrained himself. Saul eventually finishes up and leaves and goes back down to his camp. At this point, David goes to the entrance and shouts down to Saul, telling him he had the opportunity to kill him, showing him the cut off piece of robe, and that anyone who is telling Saul that he, David, is trying to kill him is a liar! That he is faithful to Saul, and never meant him any harm, ever. Saul begins to cry and tells him, you're a better man than me (vs16). Saul leaves and goes home.
