CH 18: David meets with Saul and his son Jonathan (who is David's age). Jonathan and David hit it off right away as best friends. And this friendship remains through out their lives. But Saul became more and more jealous of David's accomplishments, because David became a very successful warrior in Saul's armies. David eventually became a commander in Saul's army, and the his men and the people loved David. But Saul heard the song the people were singing about David (vs 7) "Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands!" And Saul became enraged with jealousy which led Saul to keep David very close to him, even having David marry one of his daughters.
CH 19: Saul loses his mind with jealousy and orders his servants and his own son Jonathan to kill David. But Jonathan lets David know what his father is up to, and helps David escape this assassination attempt. Even Michal, David's wife, helped David escape another attempt on his life. At this point David escapes and runs for his life and goes to see Samuel the prophet. Saul tried to get to David who was now with Samuel at Naioth in Ramah, but the Spirit was strong there and all who tried to go there ended up prophesying like the prophets who lived there, even Saul tried and ended up on the ground naked, prophesying all day and all night!
CH 20: David and Jonathan part as friends and allies in secret, but Saul continues to chase David down to kill him. Saul even invites David to the new moon festival but again Jonathan warns David and David doesn't come into this trap. Unfortunately Saul finds out his own son has betrayed him, and Saul swears at Jonathan calling him "stupid son of a whore." (vs30)
CH 21: David is so hungry, weaponless, truly desperate on all accounts, that he ends up asking for and eating the holy bread that was on the altar (the priest Ahimelech agrees and gives it to him- but David lies to get it, saying he is on private business of the King's). David also asks for and takes the sword of Goliath that was kept there in David's honor. At another point, David runs into the soldiers of king Achish in Gath and has to pretend to be insane to avoid being recognized as the commander David and being imprisoned, or worse. David literally runs around town as a schizophrenic to avoid being recognized so that when the soldiers of king Achish brought David to him, the king did not recognize him at all and let him go.
