CH 11: When the mother of king Ahaziah of Judah (Athaliah) learned her son was dead she went a bit crazy and killed all of the royal family, and took over the throne herself. But her sister, Jehosheba (daughter of king Jehoram) grabbed Ahaziah's infant son, Joash, and hid him away in the Temple of the Lord, and he lived there for 6 years, while Athaliah ruled.
The priests and the palace guards had a plan to make Joash king. So when he was 7 years old Jehoiada the priest brought the little king out; Crowds of people came outside the Temple, and the armed guards lined up around the Temple and around the little king, placed the crown on his head, gave him God's laws, anointed him and shouted "Long live the king!" vs 12.
Meanwhile Athaliah heard all the noise and hurried to the Lord's Temple to see what was happening. She saw the newly crowned king standing in his place of authority as was the tradition of that time and tore her clothes in despair yelling "treason! treason!" vs 14 The guards grabbed her, brought her out back where the horses enter the palace grounds and killed her there.
Then, finally, they tore down all of the false gods' temples and idols and altars and killed their priests. All the people of the land rejoiced and there was peace.
CH 12: So Joash began ruling over Judah in the 7th year of King Jehu's reign in Israel. He reigned for 40 years and all his years he did what was pleasing to the Lord because Jehoiada the priest guided him and he listened. But, he did not destroy the pagan shrines and the people still offered sacrifices there.
Joash decided that the Temple of the Lord should be repaired, and he enacted a system where the people put monies toward repairs in a large chest that sat near the altar at the entrance, instead of giving it to the priests of the Temple. It worked out great and the Temple got repaired.
At the end of 40 years Joash's officers, trusted officers, plotted to assassinate him- and they did carry it out. They killed him in revenge for the murder of Jehoida's son, Zechariah. (Joash's son Amaziah became the next king.) What had happened was that Jehoida the priest had died of old age, and at some point soon after the leaders of Judah convinced Joash to abandon the Lord's Temple and worship at the idols' asherah poles instead! God sent several prophets to bring Joash and the people back but they would not listen. So God sent Zechariah, Jehoida's son, to tell the people of their disobedience and let them know that since they have abandoned the Lord, He has left them. At this point king Joash ordered Zechariah stoned to death, Jehoida the priest's son, after all his loyal years of service to king Joash.
