Ch 11: David, who normally went out to lead in battle with his men (first mistake- why wasn't he there with them this time? getting lazy? contentment in his life? either way it was irresponsible.) noticed from the roof of his palace a beautiful woman ritually bathing (it was right after her menstrual period) in a house below. David wanted to know who she was and sent someone to find out. He promptly found out she was the wife of Uriah, a very devoted and loyal warrior, one of the thirty of his mightiest. But this didn't stop him from sending for her to lay with him. She went home afterwards and some time later discovered she was pregnant. She immediately sent a message to David to let him know.
To try to cover his disgression, he sent for Uriah from battle, then tried to persuade him to go home and "relax" for a time. David was trying to get him to sleep with his own wife. When this didn't work, David told him to spend the night at his castle and dine with him. He did and David got him drunk on wine. Then he again tried to get Uriah to go home to his wife, but he would not.
Uriah being completely loyal would not bend protocol rules of having no sexual relations while in battle, so David then sent a letter to Joab instructing him to send Uriah to the front lines when he returned, and making sure to back off quickly during a fight so that Uriah might be killed. It worked and Uriah the Hittite was killed in battle.
David marries Bathsheba and their son is born a time later. But the Lord was very displeased with David and this transgression.
Ch 12: Nathan the prophet was soon sent by the Lord to tell David a story of a poor man who loved his one little lamb like his own child, and a rich man who lived nearby and had several sheep and lambs of his own, but when a guest came to visit the rich man, he stole the poor man's lamb and slaughtered it for a meal for themselves.
David was furious and vowed to bring justice to this evil rich man! Then Nathan told David, "You are that man!..." vs 7
David immediately confessed his sin but Nathan let him know that David himself would not die for this awful transgression, but his child with Bathsheba would.
The child got deathly ill that very evening and died 7 days later, and David fasted those 7 days begging the Lord every waking moment to spare the child. But, it was not meant to be.
Later on Bathsheba became pregnant again, and another son was born, whom they named Solomon. The Lord loved the child and gave him the name Jedidiah which means beloved of the Lord vs 25.
Meanwhile, David returns to battle with his men as is customary.
