Ch 13: Amnon was a son of David, and Tamar was the 1/2 sister of Amnon. Now, Amnon was in lust of his half sister Tamar and out of frustration that he couldn't have her, (this all was at the wicked suggestion of his cousin Jonadab) he made himself sick and requested that she help him while he's so ill. While she was there serving him food she'd prepared, he forced himself on her.
Immediately after raping her, Amnon became extremely hateful toward her and ordered her to get out of his bed and room! She was ashamed and trying talk to him, but he had just hate toward her, so she left mourning with ash on her head and tore her long robes and called out to help as she walked back home.
Now Absalom, her full brother took notice and asked her what had happened. He then offered his home as her refuge and went and told his father king David what had occurred. David was very angry, but did nothing about it. And Absalom hated Amnon intensely.
Two years have now passed, when Absalom invited all of his father's sons (king David's sons, so Absalom's brothers and half brothers) to a party. Absalom had plotted this event to kill Amnon for violating his sister Tamar. Absalom instructed his servants to kill Amnon when he was good and drunk with wine, and they did exactly as they were told. The other sons got up and fled as soon as the servants killed Amnon. Absalom then fled his home and went to his mother's home for refuge for three years. And king David mourned and missed his son Absalom.
Ch 14: Joab, the king's right hand man, knew that David's heart longed for his son Absalom so he hired a woman to pretend she was mourning and that she needed help from David. She told David a story of her two sons who fought, and one had killed the other. Now her whole family wanted her to turn over the son she had let refuge in her home. David told her that he would not allow this to happen and that her son would be safe. As soon as he said that, she reminded him of his own banished son! David immediately recognized this whole plot as from Joab, and David then recalled Absalom back to Jerusalem but did not make personal contact with him.
Absalom waited 2 years for his father to make contact with him, but David did not. So he sent for Joab and asked that his father the king see him. This did the trick and David called for Absalom to come see him. Absalom bowed his face to the ground before king David, and the king kissed his son.
