God appoints Joshua to lead the people of Israel. But the shoes of Moses are quite large and Joshua is not fully tested. The Israelites have survived, and actually thrived through the past 40 years of wandering through the wilderness. They now, literally, stood on the verge of the land promised to them, but it is inhabited by a powerful, brutal, hostile people. The location is just across the Jordan River from Jericho, and the people are the Canaanite nations.
Deuteronomy is Moses' farewell address to the tribes he had served as prophetic leader. This book contains exhortations, warnings, instructions, and promises of blessing for Israel's faithfulness. Moses reminds the people of the seriousness of staying faithful with their God and following God's covenant to attain their blessings. Moses was 120 years old when he died, and Joshua then stepped in as their new leader.
