CH 11: Things get seriously bad this time around due to Pharaoh's stubbornness...
The last plague was set now, God told Moses He would strike at the heart of Egypt by taking all the first born sons of every family. Moses went and warned Pharaoh just as the Lord told him to. He told Pharaoh that at midnight all the first born sons would die. God even gave Moses and Aaron the power to do many more miracles in the presence of Pharaoh before midnight that day, but still Pharaoh's heart just hardened more and more and he did not believe them.
CH 12: The Passover. Here is where the traditional Jewish Passover takes place, and here is the why of it all.
The Lord gave very specific instructions on what to sacrifice and eat (a lamb), how to eat it, and what to do exactly, this very night that all the first born sons of Egypt would die, but the families of the Israelites would be completely passed over and not harmed at all. The Passover is a celebration of the deliverance of death. The Lord gave exact instructions and told the Israelites to celebrate this Passover each year the same way, and that this was the first month of their new year as well.
(How The Passover highlights Jesus' death: The sacrificial lamb was to replace the first born son of each Israelite family. Death is the direct result of sin. The lamb sacrificed at Passover was to cover the sins of the Israelites and deliver them from death. A death that man himself created when he sinned against God for the first time in Genesis chapter 3.
The Passover symbolizes the reality that would come later in Jesus Christ, who gave his life as "a ransom for many" - Matthew chapter 20 verse 28 - and Mark chapter 10 verse 45 - and became "the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world" - John chapter 1 verse 29. Jesus says to his disciples, "this is my blood, which confirms the covenant...It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many" - Matthew chapter 26 verse 28. He brings to reality the truths that were first symbolized in the Passover celebration: Through Jesus' sacrifice, sin and death were fully and finally defeated. Hallelujah!!)
CH 12 Continued: That night the angel of death passed over Egypt at midnight and the first born son of every family died. There was great wailing that night, and Pharaoh, now having lost his first born son, called for Moses and Aaron and ordered them to GET OUT. The Egyptians were caused by God to give the Israelites their good clothing and all their gold and jewelry as they were packing to leave, so the people actually left very wealthy, taking all their own livestock as well. That day, the people of Israel left Egypt with God leading Moses and Aaron, leading the people out like an army.
