GEN 25: Abraham marries another wife, Keturah. They had 6 sons and their genealogy is listed in this chapter vs 2-4.
Isaac receives the inheritance because Abraham gives him everything he owned, but Abraham did give gifts to his other sons before he died and also sent them off to the east, away from Isaac. Abraham lives to the age of 175. Isaac and Ishmael bury him together in the field he had purchased for Sarah.
The genealogy of Ishmael is listed here vs 12-15. There were 12 tribes founded and named after his 12 sons, and they lived in open hostility toward all their other relatives in the Sinai Desert. Ishmael lived to 137.
Isaac, now married to Rebekah, had twin boys at the age of 60: Esau and Jacob. The Lord had told Rebekah that her twin sons would become two nations while they were still in her womb. The twins could not have been more opposite.
Esau was born covered in thick black hair over his entire little body.
Jacob (his name means heel) was born after Esau, holding onto his heel, and wasn't hairy at all like his brother.
The twins are now growing into adulthood and Esau is an outdoor man who loves to hunt while Jacob likes to stay home and cook with his mother. Jacob loves Esau and loves to cook the game he brings home. But Rebekah favors Jacob.
One day Esau gets back from hunting all day and is tired and famished. Jacob had been cooking stew and Esau says "I'm starved! Give me some of that red stew!" Vs 30
But Jacob replies "First you must swear that your birthright is mine" Vs 33
Esau agrees! He eats and leaves the table, showing contempt for his rights as the firstborn.
