Joshua: He served as Moses' apprentice so when God appointed him as Israel's new leader, he was ready. He led them across the Jordan River and through two battles that enabled them to settle the hill country of Canaan. His next step after settling in for a time, was to divide the land between the 12 tribes of Israel (Jacob's 12 sons).
Breaking it Down Chapters 1-12: The Book of Joshua tells us how faithful God is to keep His promises, and also judge sin.
The most famous story of Joshua is how they "took" Jericho. First, Joshua sends 2 men to scout the city. Israel needed to conquer this city in order to enter the hill country and open up all the western routes. The young scouts were aided by Rahab, who was a prostitute by profession, and made a deal that if she aided them, they would spare her and her family when the time came for Israel to invade. The scouts agreed, and they did. *chapter 2
The priests and the people go to Jericho as directed by God, and as they step into the Jordan River, the river's flow temporarily stops so that they can cross. *ch 3
Joshua and the Israelites obey God's command to walk around the city's walls 6 times (once each day) with the priests blowing their ram's horns. On the 7th day, they walked around the city 7 times as directed by God, and when the priests blew all their horns at once, the people gave a great shout, and the walls came crumbling down. *ch 6
Chapters 13-24 describe the allotment of territory to Israel's 12 tribes. It's very detailed and very fair as well, including refugee cities for Israelites who accidentally hurt or kill someone. In chapter 23, Joshua, now a very old man as many years have passed, bids the people farewell as he is dying. Ch 24, Joshua summons all the tribes and they renew their Covenant (their pledge) with and to God. Joshua was 110 yrs old when he died.
