GEN 28: Isaac accepts the trickery Rebekah and Jacob played on him as he feels he has no choice, a blessing is a blessing- it's said and cannot be unsaid, so he tells Isaac to go to Paddan-aram and marry a woman there. Isaac tells Jacob "do not marry a Canaanite woman" vs1 So, Jacob gets sent away to Laban's household, Rebekah's brother.
Because Esau knew of his father's distaste for the Canaanite women, he purposely went and married one of Ishmael's (Abraham's son from Hagar) daughters, this in addition to the two wives he already had.
Vs 10 Jacob's Dream:
Jacob dreams of a stairway to heaven. The Lord is at the top of the stairway and tells Jacob who He is: "The God of your grandfather Abraham, and your father Isaac" vs13
God also reiterates his promise to Abraham that Jacob's descendants will be as numerous as the dust on the earth; and All the the families of earth will be blessed through you and your descendants vs14.
At this, Jacob wakes up and declares that the Lord will be his God also, and builds a pillar in memory of this encounter with God there, and also declares he will present to God a tenth of everything God gives him.
GEN 29: Jacob runs into Rachel at a well, and they go back to her home to her father, Laban, who welcomes Jacob with open arms. Jacob begins working for Laban, but without pay, and after about a month, Laban tells Jacob he will pay him. But Jacob has his eye on Rachel, who was very pretty. (Laban had two daughters, the older was Leah). So Jacob told Laban he'd work for him for 7 years to be able to marry Rachel. Laban agrees.
After 7 years, the marriage ceremony and feast is put together by Laban, and a marriage takes place; Laban brings his wife to him after dark; But when Jacob wakes up, he is sleeping next to Leah- and is very upset with Laban. (Seems trickery is in the family genes)
Laban explains to Jacob that it's their custom to always marry off the oldest first, which was Leah. So, Jacob agrees to work another 7 years to marry Rachel. This time Laban allowed the marriage to Rachel just a week after Jacob agrees to this agreement (and it was a week after his marriage to Leah), instead of waiting another 7 years.
Jacob obviously loved Rachel much more, so the Lord allowed Leah to have children, but Rachel was barren. Reuben was the first son, then came Simeon, the third son was Levi, fourth son was Judah. (Spoiler Alert: These are the first of the sons of the leaders of the 12 Tribes of Israel in the future to come).
